I have always been interested in illustration as an area of visual communication and have worked in illustrative ways throughout my education in art and design subjects .The reason I wish to study this course is that I would love to continue learning and experimenting with areas of illustration and animation.

These pieces of work were done in ink on paper with the use of quills and sticks for different mark making qualities. The inspiration for them was taken from old 2000AD magazines where I became interested in the facial expressions of the characters.
In a recent project I decided to work in an old Japanese Manga style, to build up a collection of ink drawings with coloured washes to create a narrative story board. Through this then became fascinated in how landscape and weather were expressed in Japanese art. These are images of exploratory work from my sketchbook as I have not yet completed this brief. I gathered inspiration from Katsushika Hokusai.
I have completed a UAL life drawing Level 3 during my course. These are a couple of images I feel best capture the figure. They were created using graphite, with linseed oil on a cloth to darken the shaded areas.
I was given the brief titled ‘catalogue of images’. I decided to source my collection from 2000AD magazines because I was interested in the graphically bold black and white styles. This is my final piece for the brief, which is a variety of images from my own imagination combined with the magazines styles. I altered each face in four different ways by using a photocopier to create exact replicas which I could work on top of. Artists of interest include Neil Gaiman and Mike McMahon.

Four monoprints on newsprint. Life drawings of the male figure to show movement and posture.

Two dry point prints from my printing project ‘imaginary beasts’. I was asked to create a hybrid animal with studies of animals various features. I combined photocopies and tracings of studies I had done as an observational drawing project at the Manchester museum of animal. I feel this was my most successful outcome.

These Lino prints developed from a narrative project in which i decided to explore German expressionism. i chose German expressionism due to the history in the work and its interesting graphic style. Artists i drew inspiration from include Otto Dix and Conrad Felixmuller.

Continued work from exploring German Expressionsim. Uses more of bright colours and the figure. Tried to capture a face within the jagged sharp lines. An artist i drew inspiration from was Kathe Kollwitz.

Collection of images created in the exploratory weeks of my foundation in Visual Communication. I had to create a collage of images from books and magazines in a compositional form to fit the overlay of 'Unpredictable Graphics'.
